While on a day trip to the Haute, I decided to try out this place after hearing good things about it. Once I arrived I started to doubt what I heard about it just judging from the outdoor appearance but don't let that be your only decision factor. The inside was quite pleasant, clean and welcoming. Service was fast and good, the food was very tasty and high quality its definitely not your mall version asian food, much better, plenty of seafood options such as crabs, calamari, shrimp, fish, etc. Although the price was a tad pricey, you got your money's worth plate's were medium size not too small or too big but they offer complimentary soup, salad, and steamed rice with the teriyaki and hibachi meals. To add: There's free WiFi! Big plus in my book.

Very very good food! I would recommend the hibachi grill. If you want a dinner and a show this is your place. Also there selection in sushi is amazing. It is high-quality sushi. It is reasonably priced, I mean it's not cheap but I would not consider it to be overpriced at all. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because some of the staff is rude. Other than that it is a wonderful place to eat. You should defiantly try it

Went on Christmas Eve, food was delicious but wait staff was a little impatient with out-of-towners...especially when it came to alcohol laws.

Tokyo is probably in my top five of favorite places to eat in TH. If you've ever been to a hibachi restaurant before, then you know how the drill goes. It's dinner and a show, and I always enjoy the show, no matter how many times I've seen it. I'm not a big fan of the dressing they use on the salad, but I love pretty much everything else about the meal. The rice is especially fantastic in my opinion. I could go there and just be completely happy eating large quantities of the fried rice.

Our favorite place to eat !!! Excellent food and awesome staff. The sushi is the best I have ever had! Sitting at the hibachi is always fun with a group of friends. Recommend a thousand times

My wife and i stopped here on a whim. It was a Thursday night and the place was not too busy. We ordered sushi and set at the HiBachi grill. The service was really quick. We really liked the Rock & Roll sushi roll, but we felt it was rather small for the price. Our chef was very entertaining but unfortunately we were at the party pooper table which seems to happen everytime we go to a hibachi grill. All in all, food was good, but was a little over priced.

Tokyo is always my first choice of restaurant. It's clean and service is always great. The rice is the absolute best part, I always fill up on it before I even get the rest of my meal.

We greatly enjoyed our teppan dinner here tonight. My wife had salmon; I had steak & scallops. After the soup (miso with a couple of thin mushroom slices) and salad (simple lettuce and a few veggies with a pleasant/sweet dressing), the chef came out for the show, starting with the get-your-attention fire bomb. He was a young fellow from Fujian province, China. He did all the usual spatula tapping, twirling and tossing routine, culminating with the always-satisfying egg juggling on his spatula, and with the last toss he lays the thin metal spatula on edge so the falling egg lands squarely in the middle, splitting the shell and spilling the egg onto the cooking surface, thus starting the preparation of fried rice. He squirted liquids from eight different squeeze bottles into the mix -- water, lemon juice, sake, soy sauce, etc. -- as he mixed, scraped, turned and pressed the rice. Several times, he'd tell me to open my mouth and then squirted some cold sake into it. Haha!! He started cooking the salmon first, then the scallops, which surprised me, since they should cook the fastest. Then he cooked four shrimp (two for each of us) and the steak. When he cooked the vegetables, he made an fiery volcano out of alcohol-filled tapered stack of thick onion rings. Fabulous! He also cut up some zucchini and tried to flip them into my mouth. Unfortunately, the combination of his aim and my poor mouth-eye coordination, I didn't taste any of the morsels. One bounced onto my shoulder; another came to rest on the bridge of my nose! LOL! In the end, everything was succulent. The seafood was not overcooked, despite having been started first. We'll definitely return with a larger group during a future trip to Terre Haute. Our only complaint is the large amount of teriyaki sauce that's used. It dominates the other flavors. Next time, we'll ask the cook to use more ginger sauce ... and to reduce the teriyaki to 1/4 or less of tonight's amount.

Came for dinner last night. I ordered the Tiger roll and miso soup, some if my friends ordered other sushi and a couple got hibachi. The roll tasted good, but the biggest issues with it that I had was the size. If i'm paying $14 for a roll i want to be able to see it on my plate. I eat A LOT of sushi and specialty rolls are always pretty good in size, but mine was almost half of what it should have been (based on experience and their picture on the website). Also, they put a very generous amount of sweet teriyaki sauce all over the roll which dominated completely, I almost couldn't taste anything but that. I'm not sure that i would get it again because after spending $27 with tip, not buying alcohol, i still left kind of hungry. This was also true for my friend who got the Rock n Roll. The issue with the hibachi is that this is one of those places that puts teriyaki sauce over EVERYTHING, im not sure why they want every part of the meal to taste the same, except soup and salad. I would try other places in Terre Haute, before i come back here again.

The food is okay, quite fun to watch the performance. Pro: great environment, good food, good service Con: a little expensive

The food here is great but we've had terrible experiences with reservations the last two times we went. The first time we showed up after making a reservation and were told "I remember you calling but we didn't write it down." Seriously. We were seated after a 10 minute wait so it wasn't a big deal. We made a reservation for a party of 10 for 6:45 last night. We showed up at 6:49 and were told that they gave away our table because we weren't on time. Most places will give at least a 5-10 minute grace period for reservations. We then waited 35 minutes, watching groups that came in after us without a reservation get seated, before the hostess told us it would be another 15-20 minutes. We left and went somewhere else. When we asked why they didn't honor our reservation or at least try to seat us soon after, the hostess took an attitude and scolded us for not being there before our reservation time.

I could care less about the main entrees. They were less Japanese and more a mixture of other Asian cuisines dressed up as Japanese dishes. So really, for a Japanese restaurant, they really didn't offer anything authentically Japanese aside from the sushi. Thankfully, the sushi itself was much better. The ingredients were top notch and very delicious. Lots of flavor and just great. But the rice was not your typical sushi rice, and you can taste the difference. If it were possible to order the insides and pass on the rice, I would, but rice is a major part of sushi and it just didn't cut it here. Sadly, the good sushi is not enough to save this review. This place was 80 miles away from home and $60 more than it was worth. I most definitely won't be coming back here, even if I lived closer.

I really enjoy going here for lunch. This is not a traditional Japanese restaurant, but that's ok. The sake is hot, the tuna is fresh, and the seaweed salad is amazing! The head sushi chef's name is Terrence. He is a Manhattan trained sushi artist and it shows. The cuts are proper and the meat quality is excellent. Especially for the price of lunch. My wife frequently orders the salmon wrapped asparagus and it is excellent as well. The staff is extremely sweet and kind. There are 2 private rooms off of the main dining room for small parties of around 8-10. The hibachi is fun and prepared well. Very entertaining. You should definitely give it a try!

Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse- Lunch Having been here quite a few times before, I can tell you it is a great deal for the lunch options they have. The first thing I noticed is how clean the restaurant was, but how the lunch crowd maybe numbered between 10-15. Normally I am here and you could easily count 25-30 patrons, and at least one hibachi grill going strong. Normally a business lunch or two can be seen as one of chefs prepares and delights the group of business clients at his grill station. This was not the case today. We enjoyed a quiet and sparse atmosphere and were able to talk without elevating our voices above normal conversation tone. Our server was nice, friendly, and very attentive to our needs. I love the décor of Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse. We enter and walk over a small bridge that leads you over a small pond. You really can feel the warm ambience of the place. I find it to be one of the nicer decorated places to dine in Terre Haute. The sushi bar is small but very clean and you can watch them prepare your sushi. This is an art in itself. They have a small LCD TV that displays specials and different types of sushi they can create. This certainly made me want to branch out from my normal order, but I opted to stick with what I know and love. I went with the 3 Sushi Rolls for $10.95 that also included miso soup and a ginger dressing salad. This is more than enough food for one person, though I am able to take care of it by myself. I went with the spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and California rolls We ordered ahead to save time and our lunch was brought out within minutes of us being seated and our drink orders taken. I opted to go with water with a lemon for my beverage of choice. The salad is small, but you really don't want a big salad with this order. The salad is basic, with some cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, and the ginger dressing. I must say it was average but tasty. Nothing about it was outstanding, but it served its purpose. I am glad it was served on a chilled plate, they earned some points in my book there. Next was the miso soup. Served hot, but not scalding, it had good flavor from start to finish. It was enjoyable, but a tad too salty for my tastes. Overall it was a nice miso soup. Now I started in on my sushi rolls, which were brought on a wooden display board. This is a nice touch as the sushi is well presented in such a manner. My rolls were pre cut, and laid out separate from each other so I was easily able to recognize each of the 3 sushi rolls I ordered. I tend to alternate when I eat my sushi so I don't consume one type all at once. I started with the California Roll. I use low sodium soy sauce in the small dish and mix in some wasabi paste to give it a little kick. The sushi includes the wasabi paste and pickled ginger on the side. I opted to use chopsticks and eat sushi the way it is intended to be enjoyed. However, I know someone of the Japanese culture would point out I made a few mistakes as I am no expert on the proper way to enjoy sushi. The California roll is a maki-sushi (roll), a kind of sushi roll, usually made inside-out, containing cucumber, imitation crab stick, and avocado. This is a basic sushi roll I tell people to try if they are first timer sushi consumers. At Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse, they make the California Roll quite well. I enjoyed it and it was not overwhelmed with white rice. I could actually taste each individual ingredient. I then went on to try the Spicy Tuna Roll. I could taste the tuna which had a nice flavor, along with the scallions. The chili oil they use is not over the top hot, but enough heat to make it enjoyable. I could also taste a hint of garlic and mayo. I have been told may helps hold the sushi roll together. My 3rd roll was the Spicy Salmon Roll. Personally, this was my favorite. They used cucumber and avocado and the salmon seemed smoked to me. It had a hint of a smokiness that was delectable. All 3 rolls were prepared well and did not fall apart when I dipped each piece in my soy sauce using the supplied chopsticks. I have been to some places to enjoy sushi and they come served so loose that they fall apart. Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse makes good sushi for the price you pay. You cannot beat the lunch specials. Be sure to check it out at tokyoterrehaute.com/temp… . The prices seem a bit outdated but you get the menu choices for the lunch time hours. I left a generous tip. The service was above average as well as the experience. I would not say I am a regular at Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse, but I do frequent it about 2 to 3 times a month. I keep going back because I know I am satisfied when I leave. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.

We had been to this place some time ago when my daughter graduated from collage. Back then we were not all that impressed. I kinda wish the ratings would go in Half Stars because while I'm giving it 3, I would probably give it 3 and 1/2. Since our favorite Teppenyaki place had closed some months before, we have been looking for a place for good Japanese steak house food. So we returned to the Tokyo for another try. For sure the meal didn't get off to a wonderful start. The soup lacked seasoning and had rotini pasta in it. inauspicious start to say the least. But the meal improved with the salad. My only complaint with the salad was there was a touch too much dressing for my taste. The the Chef came out. Part of the Teppenyaki experience is the flare and his was good. He only dropped the utensils once, The egg tossing was a near disaster with it coming close to one of the other patrons. This just added a bit of excitement to the whole thing no one was any real danger of getting hit by flying egg. At the end of the day, the food was prepared well and was very tasty. I enjoyed the fried noodles and the steak and chicken i ordered. The shrimp appetizer was good and my wife's scallops were tasty and fresh. All in all i would give the whole experience a high B+ and we will probably go back sometime.

Wow, I'm impressed! Who would have guess Terre Haute has a such a great sushi place like this! I was there for lunch with a colleague and we ordered Terre Haute roll and Kamikaze Roll, we both loved it! I was "mmMMmm-ing" each time I took one bite. It's flavorful with fresh ingredients, beautifully decorated but one con to it is that the service was kinda slow during lunch time and we only have an hour break. I'd definitely come back and don't be fooled by the kinda old-run down exterior!

Tokyo is our favorite Japanese restaurant in Terre Haute. Try the Oshii roll, which is always available but not always listed on the menu. Friendly staff.

I'm from Chicago but travel to Terre Haute pretty frequently for work. I kept passing by a couple sushi places on my way to my hotel and thought I would be brave and try one (I was leary about trying fresh sushi in the middle of Indiana). I'm a bit of a sushi snob but decided to try this place. My first impression was that it was going to be an awful experience, judging from the dated appearance of the building. You cross a stream and little bridge with fish swimming, which always reminds me of cheap motels, 60's wallpaper, dated, retro looking things, etc... Anyway, I decided to not let a book be judged by its cover. I was blown away by how fresh the fish was. I ordered mostly pieces but the couple of rolls that I tried were also tasty. I am surprised, I probably would come here even if this place was in Chicago. Not bad, Terre Haute! I have tried another sushi joint down the road that's a bit more trendy but this place has much better sushi and fresher fish. I always come back to this place when I'm in town.

I went to Tokyo for Dinner on a Sunday with the family. The cook Johney was very good and personable. His entertainment was very good. Our meal consisted of Steak for the little guy, Scallops for the Lady and Steak/Salmon combination for me. The soup was brought out hot and tasted very good. The salad was a typical salad at a Japanese restaurant. The artistry of Johney made the wait for the food very worthwhile. The little guy ate all of his steak. The scallops and Salmon were very good. The total bill for the three meals was $78 without a tip. In my opinion, Tokyo is the better Japanese steakhouse in Terre Haute. I am more likely to return to Tokyo than Ichiban and that is mainly just a personal preference.

FOOD * Overall quality is above average for a Japanese steakhouses in the Midwest * All meals come with the quintessential miso soup and delicious ginger-dressed salad * The sushi & entrées are beautifully presented. * Recommendation: Pair the Unagi-Don with your favorite maki / nagiri / sashimi, and indulge in an immaculate feast for all five senses. SERVICE * The waitstaff is quite respectful of the diners, however, they tend to stray away from being too personable with first-timers. I've never eaten at the sushi bar, so I can't say the same in that regard. * Hibachi chefs are entertaining and well-trained * The level of precision and attention to detail on each meal's presentation especially impressive considering how fast your order arrives. * Lunchtime and off hours yield the best service times ATMOSPHERE * Décor makes a uniquely beautiful use of the space! (i.e. footbridge over the koi pond) CLEANLINESS * The restaurant tidy and the tableware seems sterilized. * Restrooms are decently cared for.

My girlfriend wanted to write our review, so here it is, in its entirety. "I'm from Effingham, IL and my boyfriend and I were searching for a relatively close restaurant that could serve us good quality sushi. The closest sushi bars to us happened to be in Terre Haute, so we decided to travel there and give it a try. We typically travel to Champaign for sushi, but wanted to try something a little closer. It was a tossup between this restaurant and another sushi restaurant down the road. We decided on this place because of all the 5 star reviews that it received. We were very happy with the decision too! We came at an odd time - around 3PM, so the parking lot was very empty. We walk in and almost trip on a bridge over a fish pond, but were greeted right away by a friendly hostess and seated at a table next to the sushi bar. Our server spoke English very well. She took our order and brought out our food in a very timely manner. We ordered warm sake and Sapporo Premium beer for drinks, and then ordered edamame and dumplings for an appetizer. We both thought the edemame was the best that we have had; it was perfectly steamed and salted! We then ordered two small sushi rolls and two large rolls. We got the Spicy Crunchy Tuna and Alaska roll, then the Spicy Lover and Terre Haute roll. It was all very fresh and impressive! Price was what we expected, but very reasonable for all the food that we received. We left very satisfied and cannot wait to come back!" I agree with every point she made. We often go to a sushi place in Champaign, IL, and it's staffed by hipsters and always has really loud electronic music. This was a nice change of pace.

A friend recommended this place, so the next time I was close by we stopped for lunch. I have to admit some apprehension, since my tastes in sushi are a little different from most people (i.e. sashimi only). It was a relief to notice that they had a dedicated sushi bar and chef. So we chose to sit near the bar, and bypass the grill seating. Tokyo has 4 chef choice lunch options that vary in number of pieces. Two of us opted for the chef choice sashimi plates, and the other two ordered from the regular menu. Everyone enjoyed their food, but the two of us with sashimi plates were amazed at the quality and freshness of our choices. All the pieces were excellent. Even the miso soup, offered as we waited (short wait, less than 5 minutes) was pretty good. As for atmosphere, I don't really care about the decoration of a restaurant if the food is good. However, as soon as we walked in, it was obvious they spent a lot of effort on the decor. Everything was of very nice quality, from the tables to the small bridge crossing a pond as you enter. A sharp contrast to most of the restaurants that put up a picture or two and some fake plants. Overall, one of the best restaurants in town.

Over-priced. Some meat did not taste fresh. Will not go back for sure.
